How to Apply Half Helmet Football Helmet Decals – Step-by-Step Guide

Applying decals correctly ensures a professional look and long-lasting durability. Follow these steps carefully for the best results.

Before You Begin: Proper Storage

  • Store decals in a cool, air-conditioned place to maintain adhesive strength.
  • Prevent curling by placing decals upside down and setting a flat, heavy object on top.

Application Steps

  1. Prepare the helmet surface by cleaning it thoroughly with mild soap and water or rubbing alcohol to remove dirt, oils, and debris.
  2. For best results, apply ProPrep Helmet Polish to further clean and prepare the surface. ProPrep creates a protective barrier between the helmet and the decal, making it easier to apply and remove decals cleanly during the season.
  3. Let the helmet dry completely before applying decals.
  4. Identify key helmet features such as snaps, ear holes, vent holes, and facemask mounts that the decal must fit around. Aligning the decal with these landmarks ensures consistent placement on both sides of the helmet. Pro Tip: Print out our artwork proof to actual size, cut it out, tape it to the helmet, and use it as a guide to determine the best placement before applying the decals.
  5. Trim around the outside of the decal—cut approximately ¼” beyond the printed areas, leaving a thin clear border around the edges.
  6. Remove excess clear vinyl from inside and outside areas of the cutout decal.
  7. Position the decal before applying – Hold it 1-2 inches above the ear hole for proper alignment. Hover over the helmet without sticking it down to confirm placement.
  8. Carefully peel back a small portion of the decal liner. Pro Tip: For an even smoother application, use a hairdryer on a low setting to gently warm the decal, helping it mold better to the helmet’s shape.
  9. Apply the decal gradually, working in sections from top to bottom or side to side (depending on the decal’s design), peeling away the liner while pressing down each section as you go.
  10. Smooth each section firmly using your thumbs or a decal applicator squeegee to ensure adhesion.
  11. Use a razor blade to carefully trim around vent holes, snaps, or other helmet features for a clean, professional finish.
  12. Repeat the process for the opposite side of the helmet, ensuring both decals are evenly aligned.

Final Touches & Care Tips

  • Double-check all edges to ensure they are firmly pressed down.
  • Allow the decals to set for several hours before using the helmet.
  • Avoid excessive heat, such as storing helmets in hot cars, as it can weaken the adhesive.
  • When cleaning, use mild soap and water—avoid harsh scrubbing around the decals to prevent peeling.

By following these steps, you’ll achieve a clean, professional application for your half helmet decals, ensuring your team looks as sharp as they play!
